โฆ Synopsis
The International Symposia on Microscale Separations and Analysis were previously a series of capillary electrophoresis conferences (thus the logo HPCE 2003) which opened up to include all microscale methods some years ago. However, with more than 60% of the oral presentations on electrodriven methods, the efforts to widen the scope of the conferences have not been an unlimited success, so far. One reason is that chip-based separation systems, which naturally belong to these symposia, are expanding quickly. Thus, apart from a few overview papers, some papers on LC-MS and a few others, the conference was dominated by CE, CEC, microchips (with CE/ CEC), and proteomics. Naming one of the 16 parallel sessions Small Molecules appears to indicate that the other 15 are dealing with macromolecules. This is not criticism but a fact that the coming organizing committees should bear in mind, also considering that the 425 participants registered at the beginning of the conference was somewhat lower than anticipated.
