β¦ Synopsis
The task of deciding upon the pattern of the conference and the subject content was undertaken by a planning committee, of which the chairman was Professor M. Tinkham. As it was not possible to present the amount of submitted material within the original time schedule, it was found necessary to extend the conference by one further day. Even so, only a fraction of the papers submitted could be presented, and the committee urged the participants to make efforts to reduce the deficit by active engagement with others in their fields outside the framework of the planned programmes. As it was, the scheme adopted and the subject matter included was such as to cover the main approaches to the outstanding problems presented by superconductivity. The aspect receiving greatest attention was that of high field superconductivity.
The timetable was arranged so that four or five sessions of between one hour and two hours duration took up the day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. Four of these were devoted to high field superconductivity, two each CRYOGENICS β’ DECEMBER 1963

were the subject of another two papers. Finally, the possibility of using cryogens, especially liquid nitrogen, for the recycling of certain solid waste materials such as automobile tires and cables was studied. Two specialized excursions were arranged to allow those attending the Conference to vis
