โฆ Synopsis
The first of a series of periodic conferences on Portable Power Sources in India was held on 27 -28 May 1976 in Calcutta. The main objective of these conferences is to take periodic stock of the developments in the battery field on a national basis, particularly with regard to the improvements in the existing systems and the application of the newly developed systems.
The conference was sponsored by the Society for Advancement of Electrochemical Science and Technology'(SAEST) and was attended by over 70 delegates representing manufacturers, users and research institutions.
Fifteen papers were presented including review or tutorial articles on lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, Leclanch~ and zinc-air batteries. The other papers covered experimental programs on a variety of batteries, including such papers as improving the energy density of the lead-acid battery and reducing its lead content, a study of the different varieties of manganese dioxide, the magnesium-lead dioxide battery, the effect of superimposing AC during the charge of a nickel-cadmium battery, and electrodes for nickel-hydrogen batteries and fuel cells.
A panel discussion on the Development of Indigenous Battery technology in India was chaired by Shri K. S. Chatterjee, Project Coordinator, Energy and Fuel, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Key papers on Leclanch~ and lead-acid batteries were presented to facilitate exchange of ideas, focus on problems facing the industry and to seek solutions, particularly through the use of new developments and technology. The speakers stressed that the batteries available in India were'of excellent quality, but that costs were not competitive and cost control must be sought through improved production and distribution and finding less expensive but quality substitutes for costly imported materials. The need to conserve lead in the secondary lead-acid batteries was emphasized. It was felt that this would be achieved by relatively simple redesign. Recommendation for establishing a central battery research institute to promote development and coordination in the field was made as well as the need to insure quality and promote realistic standards, particularly in the small scale sector.
Full text of the papers presented in the conference is presented in the Transaction of the SAEST, Vol. II,). The second conference will be held in Bombay during December 1977. โข
