✦ Synopsis

Conduction calorimetry has been used to study the patterns of early heat evolution during the hydration of Portland cement. In particular, the effect of sulphate on the rate of heat liberation has been investigated with reference to the differences observed depending on whether the sulphate is present in the clinker or added as gypsum when grinding to produce cement. Comparisons have been made between total heat evolution during the first three days of hydration, total SOR content and three-day compressive strengths. Some correlation b~tween these quantities was found.

The hydration of portland cement in presence of citric acid has been investigated. The results indicate that O.l% citric acid accelerates whereas too high a dose (> 0.1%) of citric acid retards the hydration. Electrical conductivity measurements of the paste indicate that in the presence of citric a

Alkalies present in cement in the form of Na?SO 4 and/or K2SO 4 do not alter the progress of C3S and C3A hydration. The setting time becomes accelerated especially with K2SO 4 due to the formation of syngenite CaSO4.KpSO4"HpO. The compressive strength
