✦ Synopsis

In recognizing that the term 'eco-tourism' has been interpreted in a number of different ways, and at times in ways which add to the profits of tour operators without any real regard to environmental protection, this paper seeks to define a set of conditions which could help a tourist destination to be managed in a way which is consistent with sustainable development. Here, tourism as a source of economic development, the protection of the environment and culture, and the maintenance of social cohesion at the local level are all seen as important tools. It is suggested that tourism development at the destination needs to be managed appropriately with emphasis placed on local action involving a number of different stakeholders. From discussions of these issues, ten conditions for the development of a more sustainable form of tourism are proposed.
