✦ Synopsis
The aldehydc group out-of-plane vibrational activity in 3nn.f -c S, phosphorescence of p-chlorobenzaldehyde in p-sylene and acetophenone matrices at 4.2 K was examined. The 7 CHO vibration was found to be very sensitive to the matrix, being very strong in acetophenone and absent (or weak) in p-xylene. This observation, along with evidence for _1:_, .I._ . 1 iioi=~aara~a~~~ mnzractions is interpreted as due to concertsd matri.. and pseudo .iahn-Teiier interactions on the emitting state rcenforcing in acetophenone (leaving the molecule torsionally distorted) and opposing in p-xylene (leaving the molecule planar). The aldehyde H-wag mode (unlike 7 CHO) is prominent in the phosphorescence, environmenially insensitive, and interpreted as gaining its activity through Herzbeg-Teller and intramolecular distortion effects.
