By reviewing the problems and needs of machine production systems, a key issue that emerges for advancing the development of machine production systems is the need to develop total Production Information Systems (PIS). To realize total PISs in the near future, it is recognized that a unified formulation technology is required to model machine products, processes, etc., completely. In this paper, a linguistic modelling technique using a multi-layered object-oriented concept is introduced. It has the properties of transparency and openness, which are considered necessary requirements for PIS. Some formulation examples are given, and the system's feasibility and prospective performance are examined.
