✦ Synopsis
The emfs of concentration cells with lead electrodes and quartz membrane for the PbCl,-NaCl, PbBrpNaBr and PbIrNaI systems were measured. The membrane potentials, EM, were computed using the thermodynamic activities obtained from the formation cells. The sodium transport number, rN,+, in these systems was also calculated and was found to depend on the common anion, decreasing in the order Cl > Br > I. It is supposed that the lead ion takes part in the current transport through the quartz membrane. The alkali-halide systems of NaX-NaX' type are also discussed: it is shown that their membrane potentials are negligible, indicating that the only ion which carries the current is sodium.
