โฆ Synopsis
In addition to multiple scattering interactions among particles in concentrated suspension the effects of viscous-wave interactions are taken into account. With the help of the hypothesis that the masses of the grains obey a normal distribution over the phi values of the granular diameters (~b =-log2 2R, where 2R is the granular diameter), the attenuation coefficients of marine sediments a~:e calculated numerically, and a series of curves of ff/fvs.f are given for a wider frequency range than previously. It is shown that if fiR > l then as D increases so the variation of ti with f comes very close to being linear; if fiR< 1 the dependence of t~ upon f is to a power higher than the first. Here ti, f, fl, D and R are the average of the absorption coefficient, the frequency, the viscous wavenumber, the sorting coefficient and the average radius of the grains, respectively. It is also shown that the effect of the viscous-wave interaction causes a further reduction of the attenuation coefficient. A fact worthy of note is that for fiR < 1 (t/f is very sensitive to granular parameters.
