Abstract
Reasons have been advanced why in some cases concentratedโpolymerโsolution viscosity measurements are not a suitable method for determining the degree of association of groups attached to polymer chains. These are based on the finite lifetimes of associates compared with the finite lifetimes of the entanglements, which are the major contributors to concentratedโpolymerโsolution viscosities. The validity of these reasons has been checked in a system where the degree of association of polymer chains can be measured spectroscopically. It was found that the viscosity of these solutions was considerably less than that calculated by the concentratedโsolution viscosity equation for solutions of polymers of the average molecular weight expected from the spectroscopically found degree of association.
