✦ Synopsis

Computers take the tedium out of relay design

A large part of designing and selecting switching apparatus is routine work. Long lists of relays have to be scanned, tables searched, curves fitted, and so on. To test the feasibility of using computers for most of these jobs, Bell Laboratories engineers have devised a computer program that selects, and if needed, designs miniature wire spring relays. At this time the program is limited to this relay type using a single coil, but work is planned to expand it to double-wound types and other relay families.
