β¦ Synopsis
Most therapists consider patients' conflicts as potential areas for intervention in psychotherapy. Computerized Personal Conflict Assessment facilitates objective assessment of patients' conflicts and their change in therapy. Therapists select from a list the topics relevant for an individual patient. The computer presents the test items, records and stores the patient's answers, and identifies inconsistencies between patients' attitudes toward individual topics and beliefs about their interactions. The program interprets the identified inconsistent cognitive structures as representing idealΒ±real conflict, undesirability of the effects of patients' realities, value conflicts, and the incongruity (inexplicability) of patients' realities in terms of their interactions. A case report demonstrates the application of the test of intrapersonal conflict in a patient at the beginning, middle, and end of cognitive therapy. Test results highlight important clinical changes that took place during therapy, and suggest that the test has applications for case conceptualization, as well as assessment of therapeutic progress.
