β¦ Synopsis
A computer system has been developed for measuring sperm cell velocities and for classifying them as motile or nonmotile. Movies of the sperm cells (filmed through a microscope) are read into the computer using a video camera and a video compressor interface. Cells detected in the first frame are correlated with cells in subsequent frames by the criterionof minimum separation. The velocity for each cell is calculated by multiplying the average distance moved between frames by the movie frame rate. The equipment is commercially available at reasonable cost, and is capable of measuring the velocities of up to 30 cells within about 3 min.
