The Monte Carlo technique is used to study the effect of an external field on a lattice of particles interacthtg via a Pz(cos pii> potential_ The director can be pinned by the field although the orientational order is increased slightly. The observed field dependence of the long-and short-range order parameters is compared with the predictions of molecular field theory.
