## Abstract Packed columns are widely used in the chemical process industries. The optimum operation of these columns requires an even distribution of gas and liquid flows. This paper describes a method for modeling the flow pattern which develops above the gas inlet system using a computational fl

โฆ Synopsis
The paper outlines the theoretical formulation of a mathematical model capable of predicting the three dimensional, time dependent, turbulent, single phase gas flow patterns, and heat transfer in a vertical adsorber vessel. The analysis involves the simultaneous solution of the relevant differential equations by means of a fully implicit finite difference procedure'-3. The model is general and may be applied, for example, to adsorbers of any geometry taking into account the presence of such internal devices encountered in practice as baffles on the inlet pipe, the support ring and support grid for the adsorbent particles, etc. The model has been tested against data collected on a 2 m diameter adsorber test vessel including transient temperature profiles during heating.
