The Computer Graphics Metafile ( C GM ) is the International Standards Organisation standard that defines the functionality and encoding for pictures stored on computer systems. First published in 1987 as a relatively simple standard, it has since been subject to, and continues to undergo, revision so that its facilities may be developed and extended to support applications.

The Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) ~' 2 standard is an international standard that defines the functionality and encoding for pictures stored on computer systems. Pictures stored in CGM format can be transferred between different packages that support the standard. Practical demonstrations have been given of this in the USA at the National Computer Graphics Association (NCGA) events in 1987, 1988 and 1989, at the Eurographics 89 event in 1989 in the UK, and the Computer Graphics 89 Show in 1989 in the UK ~' 4. These demonstrations showed that CGMs could be transferred between engineering, business graphics, graphic arts and desktop publishing applications, allowing pictures to be reused in different aspects of production, promotion and documentation. The CGM standard has become widely adopted by applications that use computer graphics and that want to be able to export and import files to and from other packages.
