✦ Synopsis

Computer-aided design techniques are being increa~singly used in the development of diesel engines. The paper describes the use of finite element methods for the design of piston crowns, cylinder liners and exhaust valves and it is shown that a marked correlation exists between predicted and measured results, tlence factors such as piston ring groove distortion, exhaust valve temperatures and liner stresses can be readily evaluated at reasonable cost.
