✦ Synopsis
Abstract
In this article, I provide an introduction to MATLAB and briefly explore how it can be used to implement methods in computational statistics. The article starts with an overview of the MATLAB computing environment. This is followed by a discussion of data constructs, syntax, and programming capabilities. I then introduce the reader to visualization techniques and provide some examples. I conclude with a description of relevant commercial MATLAB toolboxes and web addresses for some free toolboxes that would interest the reader. WIREs Comp Stat 2011 3 69–74 DOI: 10.1002/wics.138

## Abstract The field of statistics has long been noted for techniques to detect patterns and regularities in numerical data. In this article, we explore connections between statistics and the emerging field of ‘experimental mathematics’. These include both applications of experimental mathematics
