β¦ Synopsis
Platelet aggregation plays an important role in blood clotting. Robust numerical methods for simulating the behavior of Fogelson's continuum models of platelet aggregation have been developed which in particular involve a hybrid finite-difference and spectral method for the models' link evolution equation. This partial differential equation involves four spatial dimensions and time. The new methods are used to begin investigating the influence of new chemically induced activation, link formation, and shear-induced link breaking in determining when aggregates develop sufficient strength to remain intact and when they are broken apart by fluid stresses.
