✦ Synopsis


The main difficulty in finding the solution of the diffusion equation in the human lung lies in the extreme complexity of the boundary conditions. Furthermore, the role played by the alveolar walls has never been studied before.

We have constructed, from anatomical data, the boundary conditions and obtained the solution of the transport equation. We analyze the role played by diffusional and convectional transport and, based on this, interpret the single-breath test and the nitrogen wash-out.
