✦ Synopsis
The microstructure and mechanical properties of room temperature-pressed specimens of Zinalco ( ) alloy Zn ᎐21Al᎐2Cu , prepared by powder metallurgy techniques, were evaluated. Cylinders of milled zinalco powder, with a particle size of 40᎐90 m, were prepared under an average pressure of 580 MPa at room temperature. The density of zinalco green compacts was 5 " 0.02 g / cm 3 . This value remained almost without change after sintering. The Rockwell ' f' hardness of zinalco green compacts was 33 Rf. This value increased up to 46 Rf during the first 10 h of sintering. After this period, hardness remained almost constant. Green compacts behave plastically when tested under compression by varying the strain rates between 10 y3 and 10 y1 s y1 . This material reached deformations as high as 113 / . Compacts that were sintered for 20 h at 473 K in air fracture at much lower deformations.
