86-0347 Secondary Effects in Ion Bombardment Induced Surface Erosion. Some secondary effects identified as important contributors to surface morphological changes, i e., ion reflection, lorward peak emission and redeposition of sputtered atoms and particles, surface energylsurface tension-induced changes, ion beam-divergence-induced modifications, latent plane related effects, radiation damage. and collision cascade density effects, are discussed. The role of surface energy in determining the shape of asperities such as cones and pyramids is examined, and mechanisms for changes of shape driven by the necessity to minimize surface energy and surface stress are identified. The theory of bending by surface-induced plastic deformation is verified experimentally. 94 ref.
