✦ Synopsis
Hioglass, which has a composition of sodium carbonate, calcium carbonate, phosphorous pentoxide and silica, has been shown t o bond to living bone. This ability is dependent on controlled surface reactions. Investigators with 45S5 bioglass have demonstrated that the formation of a SiOz-rich layer and a calcium phosphate film on its surface in an aqueous environment is asso- ciated with the film bonding the bioglass to bone. The objects of this research were:
1 . To study SiOz dependence o n the formation of a silica-rich layer and calcium phosphate films on a bioglass surface in a simulated physiological solution, and To establish a correlation between it1 vitri) surface reactions and it1 uivo bonding 'The designation 45S5 bioglass IS bawd on the following rode f o r this class o f biomaterials: 45-60 = mole percent o f network former; e.g., Si02 S or R = type of network former; e.g., SiOz or R z 0 3 2-10 = molar ratio o f Ca to P 'Therefore: 4655.2 is 46 mole % SiOz, 26.9 m / o CaO, 2.6 m / o P 2 0 5 and 24.4 mole Z Na2O Earlier papers used a designation code based upon weight percentagr. Thus, the "old 45S5" composition (in weight percent) is equal to the 4655.2 designation now in use.
