## Abstract The essential oil of __Schinus polygamus__ (Cav.) Cabrera f: __chubutensis__ (syn. __S. marchandii__ Barkley) was analysed for the first time by means of GC and GC–MS. Of 30 identified compounds, representing 96.3% of the oil, __α__‐phellandrene and limonene were the major components. The

✦ Synopsis
The essential oil isolated by hydrodistillation from leaves of Schinus latifolius Engl. was analysed by G C and GC-MS. Forty-eight components of the oil were identified with certainty; they represented 96% of the oil which contained mainly monoterpenes; B-pinene (3573, sabinene (24%) and a-pinene (21%) being the major constituents. Sesquiterpenes, which were all found in a concentration lower than l%, constituted 6.5% of the oil; the oxygen-containing components of these, all alcohols, amounted to 4.8%. Phytochemical studies on the oil have not been reported previously.
