✦ Synopsis

Monolayer films of n-perfluorocarboxylic acids (CF, ( CFZ ),COOH, where n =O-2, 5-8 ) have been formed by spontaneous adsorption at silver. Infrared reflection spectroscopy, optical ellipsometry, and contact angle measurements indicate that these films exhibit low surface free energies, that the carboxylic acid group is symmetrically bound at the silver substrate as a carboxylate bridging ligand, and that the structure is composed of tilted ( z 40" from the surface normal) perfluorocarbon chains and small structural defects.

A stable monolayer assembly can be formed on silver by the spontaneous adsorption (SA) of arachidic acid (CH3(CHz)18COOH) from hexadecane. IR spectroscopy and optical ellipsometry indicate that the structure is simii to the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) multilayer assembly of cadmium arachidate on silver.
