We have studied the possibilities of chemical trapping of Copper, Nickel and Cobalt from sea water within ferromanganese oxides. A careful analysis of characteristic sediments together with interstitial water analysis leads us to point out that this trapping can be effeeted by a diagenetie process. Depending on the oxidoreduetion state of the sediment, several models can explain the concentration mechanism. A thermodynamic calculation shows that only Cobalt can be oxidised to CoOOH as Manganese is oxidised. High concentrations of Copper, Nickel and Cobalt within Manganese nodules can be explained by this mechanism.
