Abstract
Complications and unsatisfactory results in the microsurgical reconstruction of lower extremities were reviewed in a chronological sequence. Perioperative complications were grouped into the following categories: improper patient or donor tissue selection, unsatisfactory choice of recipient site vessels, inadequate exposure of recipient site vessels, improper βinsettingβοΈ of the free tissue transfer, extralumenal obstruction, and miscellaneous adverse factors. Vascular changes in the limb as a result of free tissue transfer are discussed. Discussion of late postoperative problems includes the longβterm results of soft tissue and skeletal reconstruction. ## Abstract This paper describes surgical techniques and results of lower extremity microsurgical reconstruction using vein grafts. During a 5 year period, free tissue transfers were used to reconstruct 118 lower extremity defects in 109 patients. In 28 of these cases (24%), saphenous vein grafts w
Over a four year period, thirteen patients over the age of 60 (mean 69 years) underwent reconstruction of lower extremity defects with free tissue transfers. Ten latissimus dorsi, one tensor facia lata, and two rectus abdominus free flaps were used. Despite significant risk factors which included pr
