โœฆ Synopsis

Abstract

Six long records of European mean monthly temperature have been analysed for changes in continentality of climate using the time series technique of complex demodulation. Variations in amplitude and phase of the annual temperature cycle as estimated by the complex demodulation, in combination with lowโ€pass filtering, are found to be coherent across much of Europe, from distinctly maritime to distinctly continental locations. The most significant departure of continentality found during the last 460 years is the maritime period of the 1920s when cool summers accompanied mild winters along with a retardation of the seasons throughout Europe.
