## Abstract **Background:** To develop a new type of solidβliquid apparatus, we have proposed the application of an agitation system with an impeller whose rotation alternates direction unsteadily, i.e., a forwardβreverse rotating impeller. For an unbaffled agitated vessel fitted with this system,
