β¦ Synopsis
Lifetimes of, and quantum yields of fluorescence from, 17 states of chloroacetylene and 9 stites of bromoacetylene are reported. In every instance the state prepared hasmore than enou& energy for fragmentation of the C-X bond. It b found that ~~~ for HCC CI increases with increasing energy, and rN for HCC Br is insensitive to the energy of the state prepared. These o5servations are interpreted by taking note of the consmints on dissociation rate imposed by the conservation of angular momentum, the competition between vibrational relaxation and resonance amongst quasi-isolated s'iatcs, and the role of vibrational relaxation via Coriolis coupling of states.
