✦ Synopsis
In most of the R2Cu205 cuprates (R, rare earth; R:Tb-->Lu, Y, Sc), copper and rare earth magnetic sublattices order simultaneously. Neutron diffraction studies down to 1.5 K in Ho2Cu205 and Yb2Cu205 reveal a more complex magnetic behaviour in these oxides. Competing interactions between Cu and R sites lead to intermediate reorientations of copper spins. In the Yb-compound, copper sublattices display temperature dependent uncommensurate magnetic ordering above a first order transition of copper and rare earth moments.
