An in vitro model of persistent epileptiform activity was developed to study the mechanisms involved in epileptogenesis. Extracellular recordings were obtained from rat neocortical slices exposed to magnesium-free solution for 2 h. During exposure to magnesium-free solution spontaneous epileptiform
