β¦ Synopsis
Shell corrections determined with numerical Hartree-Fock wavefunctions are compared to those using a single harmonic oscillator function as the electronic wavefunction. An analogous quantity to shell corrections, based on the Bohr stopping number, is also reported. It is concluded that: (1) As expected, Bethe and Bohr based shell corrections are not equivalent, (2) the Bohr formulation gives considerably larger shell corrections, and (3) that the distinction between the two formulations must be maintained.
