Abstract

Recording characteristics of perpendicular recording media with three different stabilizing schemes of soft under (SUL) were investigated; conventional, synthetic antiparallelly (SAP) coupled, and antiferromagnetically (AFM) coupled SULs. The strong pinning due to the AFM, which led to a quasi‐single domain, presented some negative effects on recording performances, displaying a poorer writing characteristic and a stronger sensitivity to adjacent dc‐saturated tracks. Even multi‐domains due to the relatively weak pinning of the SAP appear to be sufficient for suppressing additional media noise from the SUL as the domain structure is properly controlled.
