It is shown that fmite positive values of Murphree-type efficiencies are compatible with concentration extremes of intermediate boiling constituents of multicomponent mixtures in tray columns. Similarly it is shown that the number-of transfer units for such a constituent in a packed column is &rite. This regular behaviour must be contrasted with the variation in vaporisation efficiency along the column required to explain the distribution of such a constituent and the difficulty of predicting such variations a priori is emphasised.

## Abstract An objective scheme, initially developed by Jenkinson and Collison, is used to classify daily circulation types over the British Isles, along the lines of the subjective method devised by Lamb. The scheme uses daily grid‐point mean sea‐level pressure data for the region. The results of
