PROBLEM

Narcotic users identified as paranoid and psychopathic personality types have been shown to possess measurable differences in emotion profiles. ( I p ) Psychopathic patients were differentiated from paranoid patients on three of eight prototypic dimensions. They scored higher on reproduction and lower on exploration and protection. This study extends previous work by examining the emotion profiles of two additional groups of narcotic users defined by MMPI profile patterns.

METHOD

Within 5 days of their admission to the narcotic unit at Central Islip State Hospital, a short social history form and a battery of psychological tests were offered to each patient. In an effort to ensure the validity of patient response, no one was coerced into testing. As a result, 95% of the patients completed the battery on admission.

The social history form was designed to obtain biographical, educational and occupational experience as well as history of drug use. The psychological test battery included the Ravens Progressive Matrices (RPM) (Io), the Institute of Personality and Ability Testing 8-Parallel-Form Anxiety Battery Form A (IPAT-8A) (I]), the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) (*), and the Emotions of Profile Index (EPI) ((I).
