✦ Synopsis
In our previous experiments (SZAB6 et al. 1960(SZAB6 et al. , 1961(SZAB6 et al. , 1962;; VITALIS et al. 1963) investigations were carried through to find out the possible differences between Ntreptomyces griseus strains which produce streptomycin and those which do not. The mutant strains were different in respect of permeability to citrate (SzAB6 et al. 1961), of their cell wall structure, according to ultrathin sections (unpublished results), of the distribution of compounds showing PAS (periodic acid-Schiff reaction) positivity (VITiLIS et al. 1963) and of cross-wall production.
These differences prompted us to study whether there are any reflections of the changed cell wall structure and in its chemical composition. In the following we give a summary of our results concerning the carbohydrate and amino acid composition of Streptomyces griseus strains which produce streptomycin and of those which do not.
