✦ Synopsis
(\mathrm{P}{2}) molecules in the electronically excited (C^{1} \Sigma{\mathrm{u}}^{+})state were selectively formed in (v^{\prime}=11) by (\mathrm{ArF}) laser ( (193.3 \mathrm{~nm}) ) irradiation of phosphine/argon mixtures. The intensities of emissions to the vibrational levels (v^{\prime \prime}=3-32) of the (X^{\prime} \Sigma_{8}^{+})ground state were measured in the wavelength region 200 to (340 \mathrm{~nm}). These experimental intensities were compared with the ones obtained by RKR potentials based on molecular constants taken from the literature and the electronic transition dipole moment from quantum chemical ab initio CASSCF calculations.
