โœฆ Synopsis

Inter-

The wear of ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) when sliding against Zirconia ceramic and stainless steel counterfaGes has been compared in a pin-on-plate reciprocator and in a hip joint simulutor. A lower wearfactor was found for the UHMWPE when sliding on the Zirconia ceramic counter$aces in the pin-on-plate tests. In the hip joint simulator test, the acetabular cups articulating on Zirconia hea& showed consistently lower volume changes than the cups articulating on stainless steel heads. The higher volume changes found with the stainless steel heads were associated with an increased roughness of the femoral heao!s during th tests. Z4is roughening was caused by the adherence of a rough polymer transfer film.

Wear of yttria-zirconia (zirconia) in the femoral head was investigated in mature mongrel dogs weighing 10 to 13 kg. Two dogs, which were used as a control group, were sacrificed 18 months after implantation of the uncemented modular hip system with an alumina ceramic (alumina) femoral head. A zirco
