The spectrophotometrlc determmatlon of sulphate employmg barmm salts of fluoramhc, bromamhc or lodamhc acid was studled The synthesis of fluoramhc and lodamhc acids and the preparation of the barmm salts of the haloamhc acids as reagents are described Suitable reactlon condltlons for hnear cahbratlon were estabhshed The molar absorptlvltles for the reaction products of the Ba haloamlates with sulphate were between 187 x lo4 and 2 78 X lo4 I mol-' cm-' at their absorption maxima The relative standard devlatlon at 5 pg of sulphate was < 2%
