Review of the literature reveals little to no data regarding the use of the CO2 laser as a surgical modality in the local treatment of breast cancer. This study was undertaken to determine if the CO2 laser is a surgical improvement over the scalpel, influencing patient care during the surgical and p

β¦ Synopsis
In keeping with current interest in bactericidal effects of lasers to treat localized infection, we examined the effect of C 0 2 laser light on three bacterial species. Cell monolayers were placed atop filters minimizing the presence of extracellular water. Sam les were exposed to irradiance values between 0 and 520 W/cm for 0.1 s. Cell survival was determined by colony counts. There was logarithmic killing of the bacteria with increasing irradiancei 90% kill was effected at 180 W/cm2 for Escherichia coli, 350 W/cm for Streptococcus mutans, and 250 W/cm2 for Bacillus stearothermophilus. However, standard deviations suggest no significant difference between cell types. Our results show the bactericidal effect of the COP laser with no remarkable difference between Gram types. However, substantial cell kill was achieved at relatively low irradiance. Whereas selectivity of damage may not be afforded by the COP laser, it may minimize collateral damage.

## Abstract A biologic adhesive bonding agent for bone and skin was first developed in 1966. Later experiments with cyanacrylate proved ineffective. A new 3M bonding agent, MBR 4197, was tried but proved ineffective owing to the nature of the cut surface. Use of the Sharplan CO~2~ laser eliminated
The laser beam enables tissue cutting and care of the cut edges, which prevents an increased scar tissue formation. For this reason we have used the laser beam in carpal tunnel surgery for transection or sealing of the transverse carpal ligament since 1981 because scar tissue formation is for the mo
