Abstract
In this paper, we present the results of numerical and experimental investigations of a prospective antenna which can be used, for example, as a base‐station antenna in cellular telecommunication systems. The antenna is a half‐wavelength dipole surrounded by periodically arranged capacitively loaded wires. Its operation is based on the recently suggested principle of the wire‐medium artificial lens. The development of this concept can possibly lead to the design of compact (0.2–0.5 wavelength in diameter) electrically controllable base‐station antennas. © 2004 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
