Abstract

This paper presents an innovative methodology for designing three new Artificial Magnetic Conductors (AMC) with very little sensitivity to the angle of incidence and compact size. The AMC structures are composed of a Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) placed at the interface of a metal‐backed dielectric slab. The FSSs used belong to the family of Skewed Crosses (SC). The paper begins by investigating the properties of a GA‐designed AMC presented in a previous literature. After that, a basic SC‐based AMC is extracted from this AMC and is modified step by step to improve the desired features. The modifications are performed not based on time‐consuming optimization methods, but by utilizing the theoretical clues presented in another literature for similar structures. Taking these strategies, such AMCs are obtained that have very good angular stability, compact size, and acceptable bandwidth. Periodic Method of Moments (PMM) is used to analyze and study the proposed periodic structure. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
