Communication Is the Cornerstone of Union Prevention
To prevent unionization, the employer must communicate to employees that they can get fair treatment by dealing individually with the employer. "The employer's task is to convince employees that they are being treated fairly, that they are being treated as adults, that they are part of the company's team, and that there is no need for an outsider to represent them in dealing with the employer,"states attorney Peter M. Panken in an article in the Autumn 1997 issue of Employment Relations Today ("An Employer's Guide to Meeting the Challenge of Union Organizing"). "Keeping employees in the dark may be the single greatest cause of union organization in today's economy," Panken writes.
Supervisors are management's major communication link to employers. To most employees, their supervisor is the company. "The supervisor communicates the employer's needs and desires and should be alert to understand employee needs and desires. Unfortunately, in many cases, supervisors have never received adequate training in communication," Panken said.
