✦ Synopsis

This paper is the outcome of a series of discussions and workshops held by the British Computer Society's (BCS) Database Specialist Group in Scotland. The paper outlines advantages and disadvantages of two popular approaches to system development (conceptual modelling and prototyping) and suggests that they are not mutually exclusive methods, but, in fact, complementary.
