✦ Synopsis
Attractive higher voltage Ni/H2 batteries can be constructed by connectmg several unit cell stacks m series within a common pressure vessel. The practical implementation of this concept requires the complete ehmmation of electrolyte shunts between unit stacks. To achieve this we have developed a battery design using non-sealmg, hydrophobic, thm wall envelopes around each unit stack. The effectiveness of this approach was demonstrated by construction and testing of prototype batteries of about 50 W h, contammg up to five unit stacks m series. The batteries successfully completed up to 7000 cycles of a near earth orbit test regime with deep discharge.
