Showa Denko has developed a novel solid acid catalyst that allows the production of the pharmaceutical and agrochemical intermediate, alphatetralone, in one step without the generation of waste. Alpha-tetralone is used in the production of the antidepressant sertraline, which achieves sales of Yen 300 bn/y. The market for alpha-tetralone is put at Yen 5 bn and production total 1000 tonne/y, although this is with the production of 6000 tonnes of waste metal compounds.
