✦ Synopsis
This article reviews the growth of the biopharmaceutical sector of the Canadian biotechnology industry and examines the major challenges facing that sector and what must be done to overcome those challenges.
The biopharmaceutical sector of the Canadian biotechnology industry has grown significantly in recent years. This growth has occurred despite a number of challenges, including recruitment, financing, and intellectual property concerns. These challenges remain, and the industry faces another challenge as well. It must adapt to a rapidly changing research paradigm which is revolutionizing the approach to drug discovery. This changing research paradigm is being driven in large part by the significant amount of new knowledge about the human body and disease being generated through molecular biology and genomics.
All of these issues must be addressed if the Canadian biopharmaceutical industry is to continue to flourish and discover innovative therapeutics, diagnostics, and vaccines to meet important medical needs. Drug Dev. Res. 42:113-119, 1997.
