EMI Electronics of Feltham, Middx., UK, manufacture the miniature (1.5 × 0.1875 in.) cooler shown in section in the illustration. The Emicooler is a high pressure gas operated cryostat based on the Joule-Thomson effect and is designed to produce a temperature of below 90°K within three seconds in the presence of a heat load of 2 W. It consists of a finned heat exchanger tube formed into a spiral with one end passing into a central cavity.
