โฆ Synopsis
Operating on a continuous six month cycle, the refrigerator will provide a helium equivalent recondensing load of 38 W, at less than 4.4 K, with an additional load of 100 W at 90 K. This capacity is sufficient to liquefy helium at 10 litres per hour. The cooling process is carried out by a miniature expansion turbine, which expands compressed helium. This turbine, which rotates at speeds up to 400 000 r p m, has gas bearings and therefore requires no maintenance.
A special feature of the refrigerator is its fully automatic control between zero and full load. After cooling down the motor, it switches automatically to steady state refrigeration duties. It also automatically optimizes the cooling gas flow for the electrical motor leads.
The illustration shows the refrigerator being loaded at BOC before being dispatched to IRDC in Newcastle.
